Ten Gods

伤官 Hurting Officer

HO is the element produced by the DM with opposite polarity. To find the HO of each ten Day Masters, just take a look at the Cheat Sheets here. As the names implies, hurting officer means against the officer, the superior. In terms of Ten Gods, HO clashes with the DO and when one meets another, there will be some issues. That is why there is a saying in ancient books: “伤官见官为害百般” and it means that when HO meets DO, it will bring some damage!

HO in a Bazi chart is an output element, able to attract attention to the owner, and most often is through the natural talent he/she has, the voice! Talking is one of the countless ways of seeking attention but it is also a rebellious behaviour. Let’s say, HO doesn’t like DO, representing law, orders, instructions and the owner is the one who will lead the crowd to the turmoil making heard through his persuasive voice.

Since HO is an output element, it represents talents like performing, acting, singing, teaching even talking. Generally, people with strong HO are usually highly creative and ambitious, they like limelight and lots of attention. When HO is positive and well-balanced in a chart, the common character traits shown would be: confidence, street-smart, focused, hard-worker, innovative, adaptive and fast learners but when there is excessive or is out of balance, they will turn bad: arrogant, showy, critical, argumentative, workaholic and show bad behaviours. In the extreme way, they can be against the authority, anarchist, and even husbands’ controllers or become overweight.

When HO appears in a chart it will be only favourable to strong Day Masters. It is because the DM produces HO weakening itself. Now, how much can this HO be favourable to the DM? It depends on how many HO appear and where do they appear. If they are located only at the stems, without roots, they will be very weak (unless they are supported by the season). In this case the owner of the chart will denotes superficially the characteristics traits of the HO, being apparently rebellious, sharp-tongued, talkative, good communicator, inventive, etc. The truth is, this DM can be very timid, shy and conservative instead. In fact this is not very good to have HO only at the stems as the capacity of being out-of-the-box, creative, good at performance will all fade away when comes the moment to really take it to the stage!

On the other hand, if they only appear hidden in the branches, it would mean that, no matter how good you are, no one will notice you! You need to try hard just to convince people in something that they can’t actually see or you need to wait until HO appears at the stems of the annual or ten years pillars just to be revealed, then things will happen but, remember, it will only last for those periods of time!

Although HO only located at branches cannot show its glory but it will change if there is a wealth star at the stem. Since wealth will only bring wealth if supported by output elements, a good and healthy HO can support a DW/IW element in order to allow money to come by.

However you will pass by some cases where DW/IW have support of output elements and still money is nothing that abounds. Why? First, it can be a case of a weak DM. Second, the RW star is strong. For a strong DM, RW star is a Friend star, so it’s not favourable and as I have explained at “Ten Gods Robwealth”, the RW denotes spendthrift traits and one can’t accumulate wealth even if it keeps coming.

Hereupon, if you are a strong DM and have HO in your chart, be sure that they are strong, healthy and well protected in order to achieve fame, recognition, good reputation and great success. By strong, it means revealed and have roots. By healthy, it means that it will not suffer from clashes, punishments, and others transformations that will weaken its strength and by well protected, it means that there are elements nearby that can produce it.

At this moment a huge doubt can appear in your mind: if HO needs support, then RW can be a great support. So how can we use it, since it is unfavourable? We can use it, if it is not strong and near the HO. It is what is called “usable” even unfavourable. In these conditions, weak RW will produce HO and HO can produce wealth. If RW become too strong, it actually can’t produce HO, instead it will be overwhelming (like water produces wood but when there is too much water and turns into floods, flooded and floated wood can’t produce fire).

For those who are weak DM, HO stars still mean the same characteristics traits. However the negative side will be more evident and since HO is not favourable to the DM, it will weaken the Friend elements and these Friend elements represent in fact, the wealth for the weak DM. Think about someone who wants to be a pop star and in order to launch himself to fame, decided to record his own music and CDs. Even provided with a good talent, the influence brought by the unfavourable HO star, pushed away everyone that could be his fan. At the end, he spent money but didn’t get the profits.

  1. What if my HO is in the hidden branch of the year pillar ( ho DW do), with DW as main qi and ho + do as sub qi, and the HO counters my DO in the year stem. I am a weak ding fire by the way. Is it a good thing?

My birth detail is in the email i send you.

  2. Hello, I am new to understanding bazi. I have alot of hurting officers in my chart. Does this mean I will be a difficult wife?
    DOB 12 August 1982 female.

    1. Hi Gina. Sorry for late reply.
You have a lot of HO but that doesn’t mean that is bad as long as you have DW around to serve as bridge.
There are also two situations to take note. First, the Xu sit at Hour and Year branch fall on DE making the HO “disappears”. Second, Xu combines with Mao at Hour and Day branch transforming into fire.
Further more, your have Shen as Month branch, the HO will enhance the DO through the strong DW as bridge. You may have problems in relationships, like everybody, but you only need to give your best.

  3. Hello,

Wonder you can tell me whether my friend is in the right kind ocupation, he is doing sales in a small company, does that mean that sales is the right path for him?

He has a HO in his YP and that next year’s AP will be Geng Zi, with the HO in the heavenly stem, does it mean that his sales ability is only superficial?

also i am confused whether he belongs to a strong or weak DM, his chart has many earth elements, and it seemed like he is a strong DM

    YP | MP | DM | HP
    Geng | Ji | Ji | Jia
    Wu | Chou | Mao | Xu

I also found that his chart suffers from clashes (Geng Jia Clash) and combinations ( if refer to Xing Nian Geng Wu – Yi Wei), however it seemed well protected as there are many earth beside it, while the earthly branch of fire burns it, since it is HO sits on DR, does that mean that his HO skills will only apply when he has access to education, knowledge, knowledgable people.

does that meean that when his geng is clashed or combined, his speaking ability loses out?

    please shed some light..
    Thanks!

    Binu P.H.

    1. Although HO doesn’t appear at branches you can find EG as roots. Not so strong but works.
HO is indeed a good element for speaking skills but if it’s unfavorable the negative characteristics also appear such as rebellious attitude, do not follow the rules or speak too much.
Beside HO you can use RW for sales skills such as persuasion, to convince people to buy using a friendly approach. It works very well and is desirable, instead of HO.
Before any deeper analyses, just look at the chart. What can you see? DO is transformed into F, HO, strong earth elements. They can tell us that. The owner of the chart is someone sociable, can make friends easily and with good arguments can be a great seller.
In my opinion having good skills is important but one should do the job with passion, it must be something pleasant.
Clashes always happen, you need to know if they are usable. If Geng HO is not favourable and clash with Jia DO also not favourable, then the outcome can be good.
His chart seems to be a strong DM chart but since DM is Ji (yin element), HO is surrounded by earth and fire, Yi wood 7K is not strong in the winter and DO is transformed into F, it is very possible that his DM turns “ Fake Extreme Strong” which you can read as Weak DM.

  4. What if the hurting officer is located at the month column, those this mean I will be rebellious, with another hurting officer at hour column. Birth details; April 28 2001 at 3: pm

    1. Hi Victor. Your DM in the chart combines with the hour stem and transforms into water. It will turn HO even stronger. The combinations at branches produce metal and metal produces more water. The HO now is very very strong. In this situation the negative characteristics of the HO can manifest and be more evident. That is why you can become more rebellious.

  5. Hi can i ask if there is no HO/DO at all in the bazi. Is my son still able to pursue a finance/consulting role? because most managers in this industry have many HO/DO

  6. Hi can i ask if there is no HO/DO at all in the bazi. Is my son still able to pursue a finance/consulting role? because most managers in this industry have many HO/DO like Jamie Dimon, Sergio Ermotti and etc.

    birth details: 26 Feb 2000

  7. What if snake is the hurting officer for yin wood as it contains yang fire 🔥 does it mean it contains yin fire also as snake is in the yin polarity.meaning eating god for yin wood DM.thank you.

    1. Snake is a branch and is yin fire element. When you want to analyse the Ten Gods you have to use the hidden stems that are located in the branch. In this case you have Bing (HO), Wu (DW) and Geng (DO).

  8. Hi, What happens if your DO in the month pillar of Bing Wu meets the luck pillar of HO of Ren Yin? DM is Xin Mao. Does this signify losing or changes in the career?

    1. If you think that DO refers to boss, then losing job or changing career is possible. As HO refers to rebeliousness it is possible that the reason is someone’s behaviours that lead to problems with authority. It can be related to justice but your boss or superior is also authority.

      1. And how does having a DE(void?) in Bing Wu play in the scheme of things with this clashing of HO Ren Yin Luck Pillar?

      2. DE means emptiness and Wu falls in DE so Bing turns very weak, almost absent. In this case, DO is already weak in the chart, you have to find protection or support at the elements that surround it in order to stand the clash. You also have to see if the HO is strong or get roots in the chart to decide what will likely happen. One part will win the clash. Are they favourable? Check this post.

      3. Looking at your post regarding stem clashes and combinations, does Xin (DM)+Bing (Month) = Water ? And if so, that will change the whole dynamics of the reading which is way over my ability here! Is there support for XIn DM if DO Bing Wu( in DE) has roots of DIng and Ji ? The luck pillar clash of Ren Yin(HO) has roots of Wu/Jia/Bing, does this mean this HO is not strong either?

    1. In order to check the chances to conceive you have to find formations or combinations hitting the hour pillar. If HO/EG are present and strong, not clashed in this period the chances are higher. Once you know the age of conception you can find the baby gender conception table (net).
